Alaska Road Trip 2012 – Coldfoot

After spending the day in the bus, driving up the Dalton and eating some really good rhubarb pie that we got at Yukon Station, we spent the night at Coldfoot. Coldfoot is small and probably just chock full of cold feet most of the year.

We set an alarm and got up at 2:00 AM. hoping for Northern Lights. We got dressed, went outside and stood around in the freezing dark for about fifteen minutes. We were both about ready to give up and go back to our warm beds, wimps that we are, when we started seeing bands of light forming in the sky. These came and went for about another fifteen or twenty minutes, and we feel very lucky to have seen them. Very beautiful!

It seems that there’s more than one Eagle Lake in California, which I suppose shouldn’t surprise anybody. We do have lakes, and we do have eagles. There’s one down by Lake Tahoe, and there’s one to the Northwest of Susanville. There may be a dozen others.  We went camping at Merrell Campground at the Eagle…

  • Red Rock 2018

After we left Death Valley, we went to Red Rock State Park. There’s a small campground there, first come first served.  We were luck enough to not only get a site for two nights but to get a really nice site with a level concrete pad and good picnic table. Site number 6, folks. That’s…

  • Great American Eclipse

I’d been stalking this eclipse for more than ten years. The eclipse path traveled all the way across the United States from Oregon to the East Coast. We decided to go up several days early and visit Crater Lake. I’d seen plenty of photos of Crater Lake, but they hadn’t prepared me for the fact…

Below are images and some nattering about our early April, 2022 camping trip. We went to Sunset Beach, near Watsonville, CA as the first stop. Below is the view out the back of our campsite – strawberry fields forever. Makes you want to sing about it, doesn’t it? The beach isn’t the greatest place to…

  • Joshua Tree 2024

I really like the desert. Not sure why, since it’s a totally alien environment from where I was raised. I just feel happy when we’re there. We stayed in Black Rock Campground, and it was fine. Roads were terrible and the winds were howling, but it was all good. That howling wind pretty much followed…

  • Orland Buttes

We’re still doing short shake-down trips with the new Winnie and the traveling cat. Not sure if we’re shaking down the Winnebago or the cat, but caution is probably good with either one. Orland Buttes is a small campground on Black Butte Lake near Orland, California. It’s run by the Army Corps of Engineers, and…
